George Washington University has landed one of the area’s top players in the 2013 recruiting class.

Riverdale Baptist senior point guard Nigel Johnson has verbally committed to play college basketball at the Atlantic 10 school.

“He had so many offers and a lot of interest throughout the United States,” said Riverdale Baptist head coach Louis Wilson.

Johnson said he chose the Colonials over offers from Lehigh and Florida International.

“I felt like I could go there as a freshman and make a good impact,” said Johnson, who also noted that the Washington, D.C., campus was close to his home.

Johnson, who transferred to the Upper Marlboro private school from Broad Run High in Northern Virginia, averaged nearly 30 points per game as a junior last season.

Johnson began his high school career playing at Paul VI in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, where he was coached by former Eleanor Roosevelt head coach Glenn Farello. He spent two seasons playing at Broad Run before opting for Riverdale Baptist earlier this year.

He said he transferred to Riverdale Baptist to play against “better competition.” The Mustangs, who finished 35-3 last season, play a national schedule that includes teams from outside the metropolitan area, and Riverdale Baptist travels to various out-of-town venues.

“Hopefully, we go undefeated,” said Johnson, who boasts a 3.4 grade point average. “I think we can definitely go undefeated and be one of the top teams in the country and the area.”
