Bipartisanship. The recent loss of one of the state’s greatest citizens brings to mind the absence of the greatest need in today’s Congress.

The two-party system in our nation is at opposite ends of the rainbow. The “liberal” senator who opposed Nixon and Reagan policies, almost committing political suicide, never wavered in his beliefs and voting record. He was the adhesive force uniting both sides of the aisle and respected by Democrats while losing the support of his fellow Republican, an anachronism in politics.
The Supreme Court’s decision on the financial support of elections by corporations a 5 -4 decision equates the corporation to a one person one vote concept. Again the “democracy is the best that money can buy” rings true. Mathias’ belief in the integrity of elections and his resistance to the “buying” of the process would be abhorrent to him and destruction of the democratic modus operandi. The infusion of unlimited resources by corporations and unions would result in unlimited contributions and propagandizing some true and untrue personality destruction by opposing parties would follow. Money talks!
