Princeton Day Academy’s 5-foot-7 senior guard Aquille Carr, a Baltimore native who earned the nickname “Crimestopper” because crime supposedly dwindled in the city when he played, last weekend announced his intentions to bypass college and pursue a professional career overseas.

Carr, who committed to Seton Hall University in January 2012, declined to make his pledge official during the early signing period last November and has instead opted to turn pro.

Princeton Day head coach Van Whitfield said Carr has a one-year-old daughter, Averi, whom he wants to care for.

“He needs to meet his responsibilities,” Whitfield said. “He has always been so connected to his family in general. He wanted to position himself to be able to earn a living and provide for her.”

The announcement came on Saturday after Carr scored a season-high 52 points in Princeton Day’s final game, a 121-82 victory over Central Jersey Each One Teach One Academy.

“He played an outstanding floor game,” said Whitfield, who noted that Carr also dished out 13 assists. “He was literally just playing within the flow of the game.”

Carr averaged 30 points per game and helped lead the Storm to a 34-13 record this season as the team crisscrossed the country playing games in Tennessee, New York City, Philadelphia and North Carolina.

Carr, 19, transferred to the Laurel private school last fall, months after leading Patterson High School to the Maryland 3A state championship.

“He’s really been an asset to the team on and off the court,” Whitfield said. “He’s one of those rare athletes that can make his team better.”
