Senior citizen Thanksgiving dinner at Elks Lodge

Hats off to the Elks Lodge on Kenilworth Avenue for the outstanding Thanksgiving dinner it hosts for senior citizens each year. I attended the dinner and saw many Hyattsville residents in attendance. In addition to a delicious turkey dinner and dessert, each senior wins a door prize.

Day trip to Hagerstown

On Friday, Nov. 16, I went with the seniors on a day trip to the outlets in Hagerstown. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed walking from store to store, seeing the holiday decorations and having lunch at the food court.

Atlantic City trip

The next day, off to Atlantic City we went. What a shock! We saw virtually no damage.

A few years ago, the city government built sand dunes on the beach, which saved the city from the ravages of “Sandy.” It was great fun to visit the casinos, walk the boardwalk and have lunch at The Irish Pub.

New delegate in Annapolis

Congratulations to Alonzo Washington on being chosen to finish the term of Delegate Justin Ross as representative for the 22nd District in Annapolis. Ross resigned from his position on Nov. 9. Washington is on the staff of Will Campos, who serves on the Prince George’s County Council.

Holiday events

Please mark your calendars for the upcoming holiday events.

Our city’s annual tree lighting ceremony will take place on Friday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at Magruder Park.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9-10:30 a.m., the kids will love having breakfast with Santa. Santa will also be available for lunch on the same day from 12 noon to 1:30 pm. 

Both events will take place at our Municipal Building on Gallatin Street. Please call the city at 301-985-5021 to make reservations for the breakfast and the lunch. Photos will be available too.

Hyattsville history: 1962

This was also the year the city decided to reclaim the Fourth of July celebration as its own.

For several years, it had been staged at Prince George’s Plaza as a county event.

Day-long activities in Magruder Park were climaxed by the fireworks display which attracted an estimated 50,000 people.

Perennial master of ceremonies, Dave Ginsburg, received a “Certificate of Award” from Mayor Lilly and Councilman Jay Katz, who chaired the event.
