A pickup truck struck a father and his baby — killing the 1-year-old — as they were walking Thursday evening down a sidewalk on St. Barnabas Road in Temple Hills.
Prince George’s County fire and police departments arrived just after 5 p.m. at the 5900 block of St. Barnabas Road. Firefighters and medics located the child, Sherrik Farmer of Oxon Hill, who was unconscious and not breathing. Medics quickly performed CPR on the infant and transported him to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, according to police and fire officials.
The father had been pushing his son in a stroller when they were struck. He sustained injuries to his legs. The mother, who was also walking with her husband and child, was not hit, but she was also taken to a hospital for an evaluation, said Cpl. Maria McKinney, spokeswoman for Prince George’s County Police Department.
The truck was traveling west on St. Barnabas Road when the driver, for unknown reasons, drove onto the sidewalk and struck the pedestrians who were walking in the same direction, said McKinney.
The driver remained on the scene, McKinney said, but officers are still determining why the driver lost control of the vehicle and drove onto the sidewalk. The PGPD Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating the cause of the collision.
