A 23-year-old Prince George’s County volunteer firefighter was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to robbing his former girlfriend.

Jayson Lassiter pleaded guilty in June in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia to armed robbery. He was sentenced Monday.

After serving his three-year prison term, Lassiter will be placed on five years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. said.

Lassiter drove three other Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department volunteers on March 26 to the 1300 block on Michigan Avenue SE, where his ex-girlfriend was living. They were going to retrieve a cell phone Lassiter had given his ex-girlfriend for Christmas. After a brief argument, they left without the phone, according to Metropolitan Police Department.

A few hours later, Lassiter and two volunteer firefighters decided to go back to the former girlfriend’s home to get the phone. Lassiter picked up two family members of one of the other volunteer firefighters, and then they all returned that night armed with two shotguns and masks, according to police officials.

Before reaching the home, Lassiter let his four accomplices out in an alley and proceeded to the home alone to draw the ex-girlfriend and others outside. When they all came outside, authorities said Lassiter’s masked and armed accomplices began assaulting them.

One accomplice, Kevin Smith, 19, of Suitland, pointed a shotgun at Lassiter’s ex-girlfriend and a man and ordered them into the home. Once inside the home, Smith stole their cell phones and hit the man in the face with the butt of the shotgun, breaking the man’s nose.

Lassiter and the four accomplices fled the scene in his car, police said.

The victims immediately identified three of the suspects, according to authorities. The fourth accomplice was later identified.

All four accomplices have pleaded guilty to charges. Lassiter is the first to be sentenced, authorities said.
