Bowie man charged with unlawful entry into the White House

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Secret Service arrested a 55-year-old Bowie man and charged him with unlawful entry last Tuesday after he drove his vehicle through the White House gates.

The Secret Service say Matthew Evan Goldstein followed a motorcade carrying President Barack Obama's daughters around 5 p.m. but uniformed agents stopped him as he trailed in through the entrance.

District of Columbia police swept the vehicle for explosives as it sat just feet away from the northwest gate of the White House. Police shut down access to Pennsylvania Avenue and the White House complex for an hour while conducting the search.

After spending a night in D.C. jail, Goldstein appeared in federal court and was released late Wednesday afternoon.

Police say they are still investigating whether Goldstein accidentally got behind the motorcade or if his actions were intentional.

Goldstein is scheduled to appear at another hearing on May 21, in D.C. federal court.
