Body of retired University of Maryland professor found in creek

COLLEGE PARK – The body of a retired University of Maryland associate professor of business, who has been missing since March, was found Saturday morning near the Indian Creek Trail at Lake Artemesia.

“We have identified the victim as Stan Fromovitz, 80, of the 6500 block of Westchester Park Drive in Greenbelt,” said Director of Media Relations for the Prince George's County Police Department Jennifer Donelan. “He was reported missing on March 13.

“We did an extensive search of Greenbelt National Park, which is next to his apartment complex, as well as checked area hospitals. We also checked to see if they were any bank transactions.”

Around 9:30 a.m. on April 1, students from the University of Maryland were taking part in the annual College Park Good Neighbor Day community cleanup event when they found Fromovitz in a creek which flows into Lake Artemesia.

National Capitol Park Police, along with patrol units and detectives from the Prince George's County Police Department, were called to the scene. Units from the College Park and Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Departments also helped out.

Firefighters from both departments were able to pull Fromovitz’s body from the creek where police took over the investigation.

“We don't think he had any health problems, but we have to see what the medical examiner has to say,” Donelan said. “We also believe there was no foul play.”
