Mount Rainier sees first homicide in years

mtrainierhomiMOUNT RAINIER – It has been almost five years since the city of Mount Rainier had a homicide, but that ended early Saturday morning when a man was found dead on the sidewalk next to the Mount Rainier Library.

Just after 6:30 a.m., patrol units from the Mount Rainier Police Department, along with units from the county’s police and fire departments, responded to the 3400 block of Rhode Island Avenue for a report of an unconscious man lying on the sidewalk.

Upon arrival, units found an adult male, who police have identified as 25-year-old German Garcia-Paredes of Brentwood, suffering trauma to his upper body. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

“We are waiting for the medical examiner to determine the cause of death,” said Cpt. James Stoots of the Mount Rainier Police Department.

Court records shows that Paredes was arrested in February of 2015 for second-degree assault.  His homicide was the 62nd of the year in the county.

Detectives believe the homicide was not random and are working to identify a suspect(s) and motive in the case. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.
