ADELPHI – Detectives from the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit arrested two teenagers last Wednesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of a homeless man at an Adelphi park.
Police arrested 14-year-old Elias Portillo of the 7900 block of 18th Avenue in Adelphi, along with a 13-year-old, for the homicide death of Francisco Sagastizado.
Patrol units from both Maryland-National Capital Park Police and Prince George's County Police responded just after 8 a.m. on July 27 to the Northwest Branch Adelphi Manor Park in the 7800 block of West Park Drive for an unresponsive male. Upon arrival they found Sagastizado suffering from stab wounds to his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The two teens were looking to rob someone for $20,” said department spokesperson Cpl. Tyler Hunter. “Sagastizado was stabbed when he refused the teens’ demands for the money. We also determined that both teens were not affiliated with any gangs.”
According to Maryland law, a 14-year-old can be charged as an adult for crimes.
Both teenagers have been charged with first and second-degree murder. Portillo is in custody of the department of corrections. The 13-year-old suspect is in custody of the Cheltenham Youth Detention Facility.
