LARGO – Prince George's County Police Department homicide detectives are investigating an apparent murder-suicide that took place Tuesday night inside a senior living community condominium in Largo.
Police were called just after 8:30 p.m. to check on the welfare of a resident at the Cameron Grove Condominium in the 14000 block of New Acadia Lane after residents had not seen or heard from the resident in several days. A strange odor was also said to be coming from the apartment.
When patrol units from Prince George's County Police Department arrived on the scene and entered the apartment, they found an adult male and female suffering from gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. Both were pronounced dead on the scene.
Sources said both had been dead for several days.
Police said the victim is 54-year-old Bernard Williams of Miller Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. The suspect is 53-year-old Kiwa Toomer of the 14000 block of New Arcadia Lane. The victim and suspect were in a relationship.
“This is generally a quiet senior citizen targeted community, so I certainly understand this is unsettling to many of the residents here,” said Cpl. Tyler Hunter, a spokesperson for the county police. “But we are investigating this as a murder-suicide, so at this point we don't believe there would be any active threat to anyone else here at the complex.”
Residents who live in the building were shocked to hear what happened.
“I can't believe this happened,” said Ellen White, who has lived in the building for a few years. “This is a very nice community. That's why I moved here.”
Investigators and detectives are working to establish a motive in the county's 65th homicide of the year.
