UPPER MARLBORO – A former 34-year-old substitute teacher for the Prince George's County school system, and youth basketball coach at South County Sports Academy, was indicted in an Upper Marlboro courtroom on Sept. 1 for possession and distribution of child pornography.
A grand jury indicted Christopher Speights of the 5900 block of Applegarth Place in Capitol Heights on three counts of possession of child pornography with intent to distribute and six counts of possession of child pornography.
Police arrested Speights in April after they received tips of a Dropbox account belonging to Speights containing child pornography.
Maryland state troopers from the Maryland State Police's Computer Crimes Unit obtained a search warrant for the house where Speights lived with his mother and seized Speights' iPhone, iPad and computer that were linked to the Dropbox account.
According to charging documents, police found at least 153 files featuring graphic images or content showing minors performing sexually explicit acts. They also found several child pornography videos. Investigators believe some of the children in those videos were as young as 7 years old.
Police have identified about a dozen potential victims, but are unable to identify other potential victims because they believe there is a possibility \ some of the victims may not live in the county or the state.
“Speights had contact with children through the South County Steelers as a traveling basketball coach,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said. “He also had contact with children through Bradbury Heights Elementary School. We have come to understand that he invited children to his home and they stayed with him there or during the course of the time when they were traveling with the team. He also had an opportunity to be alone with some of these children. So, parents who know of Christopher Speights and know that he had contact with their children, we would like for them to reach out to you.”
Alsobrooks also said one of the biggest problems in today's society is that many children have their own phones and are using apps such as Snapchat and Kik Messenger to communicate with predators without their parents knowing.
In February 2016, former aide Deonte Carraway was arrested for child pornography after an uncle found disturbing photos on a 9-year-old’s cell phone. That night the uncle went to the police. The next day, Carraway was question and arrested.
Speights is facing a new charge of sexual abuse of a minor and is facing charges in federal court as well.
Investigators from the Maryland State Police's Computer Crimes Unit are asking for anyone whose children may have had contact with Speights to call them at 1-800-637-5437.
Speights in custody on a no-bond status and will appear in court on Nov. 13.
