LANDOVER – It took detectives from Prince George's County Police Department's Cold Case Unit more than eight years, but they can now close a case related to a June 2, 2009 homicide in Landover.
Detectives arrested 27-year-old Larry Recio of the 5700 block of Lyngate in Lanham for the homicide of 19-year-old Shai Caldwell of Windflower Way in Bowie.
On June 2, 2009, just after 11:30 p.m., officers were called to the 9000 block of Continental Place in Landover for the report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they discovered four victims outside a house suffering from gunshot wounds.
Caldwell was transported to Prince George's Trauma Center suffering from gunshot wounds to her upper body, but died several hours later. The three other victims survived their injuries.
Detectives developed Recio as the suspect and subsequently charged him in this case based on information from witnesses and evidence linking him to the shootings. The investigation revealed the victims were attending a graduation celebration the night of the shootings. Caldwell was not an intended victim. Detectives believe the suspect had been in an ongoing dispute with another group of males.
According to court records, Recio has been arrested in the county several times for reckless endangerment, first and second-degree assault, and possession of a firearm along with other charges.
Recio is charged with first-degree murder and several counts of attempted first-degree murder. Currently he is in the custody of the Hazelton Federal Correctional Institution in West Virginia on unrelated charges.
