LAUREL – A 46-year-old woman was killed Monday evening as a result of a motor vehicle accident in Laurel.
Just before 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 23, firefighters from Laurel Volunteer Rescue responded to the intersection of Laurel Bowie Road and Bowie Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident.
Once firefighters arrived on the scene, they reported a collision involving a van and a second vehicle with a woman as a passenger inside the van. Police identified the woman as Lucia Espirtu-Cortez of Avery Drive in Laurel, who was suffering life-threatening injuries.
She was transported to a nearby hospital, but due to her injuries doctors were unable to save her.
The driver of the van and the second victim, along with the driver of the second vehicle, were also transported to a local hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries.
Police officials believe the van was traveling northbound on Laurel Bowie Road when the driver attempted to make a left turn onto Bowie Road. The second vehicle, which was traveling southbound on Laurel Bowie Road, collided with the van.
