FAIRMONT HEIGHTS – Two people were found dead and a firefighter was injured early Thursday morning after a house fire in Fairmont Heights.
The fire was reported around 5:30 a.m. in the 6200 block of Foot Street just off Martin Luther King Hwy near the county/D.C. border.
The first arriving engine reported a two-story house fully engulfed in flames. Due to very heavy fire conditions on all floors of the house, firefighters had to battle the fire from the outside until the bulk of the fire was extinguished.
“It took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control,” said Mark Brady, spokesperson for the Prince George's County Fire Department. “Once the bulk of fire was extinguished, crews were able to get inside and conduct a search of the house. When they reached the top floor they located the two unidentified bodies deceased.
“The house has been abandoned for several years and neighbors tell us they've seen squatters inside over the past couple weeks.”
Furthermore, Brady said one firefighter suffered a leg injury while battling the fire. He was treated at a local hospital and released.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and the victims’ names will not be released until an autopsy in conducted.
