Police searching for suspect in New Carrollton shooting

NEW CARROLLTON – A 24-year-old man was shot and killed Monday night at a New Carrollton apartment complex and police are searching for the suspect.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. at the Cambridge Apartment complex in the 5300 block of 85th Avenue near Annapolis Road.

“When our patrol units arrived on the scene they found an adult male outside an apartment building suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body,” said David Rice, police chief of the New Carrollton Police Department. “He was transported to a nearby trauma center where he was pronounced dead.”

Police have identified the 24-year-old man as Desmond Burns of 5300 block 85th Avenue in New Carrollton.

Rice said prior to units from the Prince George's County Fire Department arriving on the scene, police officers provided emergency aid to the Burns.

“I was inside my apartment when I heard a gunshot,” said Damon Carter, who lives near the shooting scene. “When I came outside I saw a police car, an ambulance and a man on the sidewalk not moving.”

Witnesses told police they saw a man running from the scene.

Burns had been arrested several times in Prince George's County for possession of marijuana, and other crimes.

“This is the first time in several years we had an incident at this apartment complex,” Rice said. “It is usually a quiet area.”

Homicide detectives from the Prince George's County Police Department were called to the scene to take over the investigation.
