LANDOVER – Tragedy struck a Columbia Park community when a mother and her 2-year-old son were found dead Saturday night in the basement of a townhouse.
Around 10 p.m., patrol units from the Prince George's County Police Department, along with units from the county fire department, responded to the 1700 block of Countrywood Court off of Sheriff Road after a family member called 911 asking officers to conduct a welfare check on his wife and child.
According to officials on the scene, when units arrived and made entry into the townhouse, they found 2-year-old Joseph Wang and his 34-year-old mother Yu Song dead in the basement. The mother and child died of asphyxiation after being hung.
The preliminary investigation revealed the mother killed her son before taking her own life.
Prior to police and fire units arriving on the scene, Song’s husband attempted to enter the townhouse, but was unable to and called 911 for help.
Residents who live in the complex said the family was renting the home for the last several months and had recently moved out, but saw the mother’s car parked in the parking lot. They then saw the father’s car in the parking lot with him standing next to it looking upset. A few minutes later police and fire units arrived on the scene.
“The motive of this very sad incident is under investigation by our detectives from our homicide unit,” Prince George's County Police Department spokesperson Cpl. Tyler Hunter said. “If anyone knows anything that could help detectives they can call 301-772-4925.”
