MITCHELLVILLE – A man is in critical condition after he was shot byan 83-year-old home owner after he broke into a Mitchellville home early Wednesday morning.
Around 12:30 a.m. patrol units from Prince George's County Police Department responded to the 11700 block of Chantilly Lane for a report of a break in with a person shot.
According to officials on the scene, the suspect broke in through the basement and then kicked through the door leading to the rest of the home.
The 83-year-old man told police he heard sounds coming from his basement, seconds later he was confronted with a man wearing all black. With gun in hand he fired three times with one of the bullets striking the suspect in the chest. The suspect ran from the scene.
The home owner, Joseph Parker said "I didn’t want to kill anybody. But I didn’t want to be killed.”
As police were canvassing the area they got a 911 call around 1:45 a.m. from another home owner who lives a block away in the 3800 block of Clairton Drive stating a man came to his door asking for help.
Police responded to the address and arrested the suspect. He was transported to a trauma center in critical condition.
Prince George's County Police Department spokesperson Cpl. Lamar Robinson said " It will be up to the state's attorney if any charges will be filed against the home owner.
Residents who live in the area said there has been other break-ins over the last several weeks, Police will be looking into if the suspect maybe link to the break-ins.
