EDMONSTON - A homeless man was shot, and a Town of Edmonston Police Officer was injured on Feb. 22 after a departmental shooting.
The shooting allegedly happened just after 10:30 a.m. in front of a liquor store in the 4200 block of Kenilworth Avenue in the town of Edmonston near the Bladensburg area,
According to many witnesses, the homeless man who is known to people in the area was walking down Kenilworth Avenue screaming out loud. The Edmonston Police officer stopped the man and spoke to him briefly.
The man then walked towards to the liquor store and went inside. He came out, and the officer stopped the man who started to scream at the officer.
At that point, Edmonston Police said a fight allegedly occurred in the parking lot of the liquor store with the homeless man hitting the officer multiple times and striking him in the face. The officer used his Taser but it was not effective, and then he shot the homeless man three times. He was transported to a trauma center in critical condition.
"Our Officer was also transported to the hospital with non-life- threatening injuries," Deputy Chief Billy Sullivan of the Town of Edmonston Police Department said. "He has been an officer with our department for a year."
