Prince George’s County fire investigators and Laurel Police are investigating a fire at a Laurel park that destroyed more than $100,000 worth of playground equipment.
The fire was reported just before 2 p.m. at Discovery Park in the 1000 block of Harrison Drive — just a few blocks from Laurel Police Department, Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department officials said.
Firefighters reported heavy black smoke that could be seen a few miles away, officials said. Once fire units arrived on the scene, they extinguished the fire within 20 minutes.
The park was dedicated in 1993 and has become one of city’s most popular parks for local children and families.
In 2009, the park was updated with new equipment, a rubberized play surface, and plastic and wood play equipment using grant funding, said Pete Piringer, spokesperson for the City of Laurel.
City officials were planning to rebuild parts of the playground this summer, Piringer added.
Laurel is now offering a $2,000 reward for any tips leading to the arrest and indictment of the arsonist. Anyone with information regarding the fire is asked to call 301-498-7645.
