New charter school welcomes students

Possibility Preparatory Academy, Prince George’s County’s newest public charter school, and founded by The 100 Black Men of America’s Maryland Chapter, opens to young men in sixth through eighth grades for its first year Aug. 23.

The school welcomed 450 students and held a brief opening day ceremony attended by Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, Maryland state superintendent of schools, and Dr. William Hite, Jr., superintendent of the Prince George’s County Public Schools.

“Education is about opening young minds to the possibilities that result from a lifetime of learning,” said Judge Thurman Rhodes, chairman of Possibility Prep Board.  “At Possibility Prep, students will realize and understand that they can do whatever they set their minds to- and that there are no limitations, only possibilities.”

The principal of Possibility Prep is Rodney Henderson, who is an experienced education administrator and leader in the Prince George’s County Public School District. During his tenure as principal of Kenmoor Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, he led a turnaround resulting in the school becoming one of the county's highest performing “Distinguished Schools” award winners.

Maryland’s new president

Wallace D. Loh was appointed as the new president of the University of Maryland College Park, according to an Aug. 17 press release.

Loh previously served as Provost at the University of Iowa and dean of the University of Washington Law School.
