Register now for the Oxon Hill Food Pantry Walk-a-Thon

Walk to help feed the hungry! For the 17th year, the Oxon Hill Food Pantry is hosting a walk-a-thon along the two miles of the Henson Creek Trail, which is four miles if you walk up and back, on Saturday, May 11. Runners are welcome.

You can walk as an individual ($10 walker registration), be a donor (not walking or acting as a sponsor), or be a business donor. You can mail your registration or donation to PO Box 0934, Temple Hills, MD 20757-0934 until May 4. Or register on the day of the walk-a-thon, May 11.

Parking and sign-in will be at the Oxon Hill Lutheran Church, 3415 Brinkley Road in Temple Hills. The registration table opens at 9 a.m. and closes at noon. For information or to volunteer, call 301-899-8358.

Morningside election

Morningsiders will go to the polls May 6 to elect a mayor and two council members. Running for mayor is Kenneth Wade; the current mayor, Karen Rooker, has decided not to run again. James Ealey, Todd Mullins and Elizabeth Long are running for the seats now held by Ealey and Mullins. I’ll tell you more about the candidates in a later column.

Suitland Road mayhem

The brick wall has been hit again, and leveled! For the third time in 20 years, a car has left the road and plowed down that wall in front of a home at the corner of Suitland Road and Pine Lane. Stan Holmes, who lives across the road, heard the impact at about 8 a.m. April 8, and took some good photos of a badly-damaged red sedan.

And this week I noticed that the new bus shelter near the VFW on Suitland Road has been wrecked. Apparently, a car driving too fast on Suitland Road jumped the curb and crunched the shelter. However, I haven’t seen tire tracks.

Coming up

Andrews Federal Credit Union hosts its Spring Shred Day from 2 to 5 p.m. April 20 at 5711 Allentown Road. It’s available to the members and the surrounding community.

Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church invites to you an Earth Day Celebration at 10:30 a.m. April 21. There will be a creative celebration of Earth Day, “Moving Boldly Forward,” poets and singers joining the DC Labor Chorus, a photo exhibit, and an Earth Chalice created by a team headed by artist Caryl Henry Alexander. The church is at 7400 Temple Hill Road in Camp Springs. For information, go to www.dmuuc.org or call 301-449-4308.

May they rest in peace

Vincent Roper, co-founder along with his wife Roberta, of the Stephanie Roper Committee & Foundation (now, Maryland Crime Victims’ Resource Center), died April 4. I’ll pay tribute to this remarkable man in next week’s column.

Dr. Paul Austin Dorn Jr., an ophthalmologist with offices in Temple Hills for 44 years, died Feb. 16.

Audrey Elizabeth Sherman, 66, a 1963 graduate of Suitland High School, died April 2 at her home in Forestville. She was born in Washington, daughter of Melvin and Frannie Faucette Anderson. Survivors include her husband Charles “Butch” Sherman; children, Dawn Brash and Nathan “Nate” Sherman; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and her brother Alvis Anderson.

Barbara Ann “Bobbie” Catterton, Suitland High graduate, died Feb. 21. She worked at the Navy Yard and retired from FAA before moving to Las Vegas. Survivors include her children, Mike, Francie, Lisa and Jamie, several grandchildren and three siblings.
