Hyattsville hires

Congratulations to newly appointed City Administrator Jerry Schiro and Director of Human Resources Vivian Snellman. The two new hires have decades of experience between them. Vivian worked for more than 25 years in Honeywell’s human resources department before becoming a human resources consultant. Jerry brings to the job more than 35 years of public service, 11 years as village manager of Chevy Chase.

May he rest in peace

The Hon. David G. Ross, retired U.S. Army colonel and resident of Bowie passed away June 4.

He was the father of Justin Ross, our former House of Delegates member for the 22nd legislative district, which includes Hyattsville.

Often called “Judge Ross,” he began his public service career as a member and chairman of the Prince George’s County Community College Board of Trustees. He was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1970, where he proudly served for eight years. He went on to serve as a judge on the 7th Circuit Court of Maryland and was honored as the “National Family Court Judge of the Year” in 1989.

He will be remembered as a fierce advocate, loyal leader, faithful friend, and a loving father and grandfather. He was a lovely man, and we will all miss him.

City budget

Hats off to our City Council members for their hard work and dedication in attempting to pass a new budget for fiscal 2014, which will begin on July 1. Some departments will be asked to sacrifice as cut backs seem inevitable.

Summer Jam Session

Hope to see everyone Friday evening for some barbecue and live music at the Jam Session. It will be held at the parking lot of our City Municipal Building on Gallatin Street. Someone told me that the ribs are “mmm, mmm good.”
