Douglass wide receiver Demory Monroe steps up

Douglass suffered its second straight loss to Middletown in the Class 2A State Championship on Saturday, but the efforts of one player cannot be overshadowed. Senior wide receiver Demory Monroe helped lift his offense with six receptions for 102 yards and one touchdown. Standout wide receiver Paul Harris was double covered for most of the game and held to zero catches. Someone had to take the torch and give his team a shot to win, and Monroe answered. Monroe played his final game in an Eagles’ uniform, but he left his mark in the title match and never gave up when adversity stood in his way.

Wise ends perfect season as state champs

Wise won the 4A State Championship against Quince Orchard in a 12-7 nail bitter. Chase Powell torched the Cougars with 20 carries for 130 yards and a touchdown. Junior quarterback Isaiah Black showed his maturity and experience leading his team to victory going six-for-13 while throwing for 103 yards and the game-winning touchdown to his favorite target, Micah Till. Wise will retain many of its starters going into next season, and the Pumas’ goal will still be the same now that they have a championship already under their belt.

Former Maryland linebacker D’Qwell Jackson received a high NFL honor last Wednesday. Jackson was named the AFC player of the week for his efforts against Pittsburgh. Jackson helped Cleveland hold Pittsburgh to an 11 percent conversion rate on third downs and led a defense that forced eight turnovers. Jackson is still revered as one of Maryland’s best linebackers to put on a Terrapins’ uniform — ranking fourth all-time in tackles with 447 to his name.
