An Upper Marlboro man was killed early Wednesday in a collision with a Prince George’s County police cruiser.
The accident occurred around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Collington Road (Route 197) and London Lane in Bowie.
Police identified the driver as James Toliver, of the 10700 block of Castleton Way in Upper Marlboro. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Cpl. Michael Mogavero, a nine-year veteran assigned to the Special Operations Division, was responding to a departmental accident in District Heights, when Toliver’s vehicle moved into the path of his police cruiser. The cruiser struck Toliver’s vehicle in the driver’s door, according to Prince George’s County Deputy Police Chief Hector Velez.
“We do not know if the officer had the green light or if the other vehicle had the green light,” Velez said. “We’re trying to figure that out.”
Mogavero was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is investigating the cause of the collision and working to determine fault, police said.
“It would be up to the state’s attorney’s office if anyone would be charged,” Velez said.
