Eleanor Roosevelt beats Laurel, Flowers on road to Regional Championship

Eleanor Roosevelt’s girls’ basketball squad defeated Laurel 56-21 on Friday. Daria Simmons set the tone with 15 points, and Kailia Charles, Jazmin Faulkner and Chantel Thompson also scored in double figures. The Raiders are undefeated in conference play and beat Flowers to advance to the Regional Champtionship, but they will have a tough task against North Point on Thursday to make it to the Class 4A State Championship on Saturday.

Friendly advances to Regional Championship

Friendly’s girls’ basketball team will advance to the Class 3A Regional Championship against River Hill. Friendly defeated Westlake 61-28 on Friday. Chayla Lewis had a scoring frenzy with 21 points, and she pulled down nine rebounds too. Damicia Armstrong and Danielle Pray scored in double figures to pull away with the victory. The Patriots will face off against River Hill at 9 p.m. Thursday at UMBC RAC Arena.

Bowie State wins Men’s CIAA Championship

Bowie State’s men’s basketball team won the CIAA Championship against Livingstone University 85-74 on Saturday at Time Warner Cable Theater. Byron Westmoreland was named the most valuable player with 27 points. This win marks head coach Darrell Brooks’ first championship victory. The Bulldogs won the men’s championship in 2003, but they had not won since then.

Eleanor Roosevelt knocks Parkdale out of playoffs

Eleanor Roosevelt’s boys’ basketball team defeated Parkdale 80- 60 in the Maryland 4A South Quarterfinal last Thursday. Roosevelt senior forward Malachi Alexander led the Raiders with 27 points. Tiwian Kendley and Trevor Evans also scored in double figures in the second round victory. Roosevelt remains the top seed in the playoff brackets and will face Flowers on Tuesday.

DuVal defeats Northwestern, 58-47

DuVal’s boys’ basketball team knocked Northwestern out of the playoffs in an 11-point victory last Thursday. In a collective effort, DuVal took control in the quarterfinal, and Michael Cunningham led all scorers with 15 points. Paris Jones scored 14 points, and Charles Ekeanyanwu had 10 points and seven rebounds. The Tigers will face No. 3 Wise on Tuesday.
