A former Riverdale Baptist girls’ soccer coach has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for sexually abusing a student.

Charles Vasser, 35, of Seat Pleasant, was found guilty of five counts of child sexual abuse in January.

In a bench trial Friday, Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge Daneeka Varner Cotton sentenced Vasser to serve 35 years behind bars. Vasser was also sentenced to five years of probation, and he must stay away from the victim. He also is not to have unsupervised contact with minor females except for his daughters.

From October 2008 through July 2009, Vasser had an array of sexual contacts with the victim, who was 15 years old and a member of the soccer team at the time the incidents. Vasser’s criminal sexual acts against the victim included sexual intercourse, digital penetration and kissing.

“Our community is especially devastated when a child is sexually abused at the hands of someone who seemed to be a trusted and responsible adult,” Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks said. “As a result of this sentence, Mr. Vasser will have plenty of time to reflect on his terrible actions.”
