April has been designated as National Financial Education month and there are lots of opportunities for Marylanders to attend events or workshops to learn new tips on managing money. The Commission on Financial Education and Capability, of which MD CASH Campaign is a member, has compiled a calendar of financial education events, which can be found on www.mdcash.org.
In honor of National Financial Education Month, MD CASH is launching its new “Passport to Prosperity” incentive program, where you can earn points while learning about money. You can sign up either online at www.mdcashacademy.org or by attending a class and getting a Passport from a local Educator. After signing up, you can earn points in a variety of ways: attend CASH Academy classes, do something financially-related like checking your credit report, or reach a financial goal such as saving a set amount of money. There are four levels of achievement in the “Passport To Prosperity” program:
* MD CASH Academy Student
*MD CASH Academy Honor Student
*MD CASH Academy Scholar
*MD CASH Ambassador
During April, all points earned will be doubled and the first 15 people to get to MD CASH Academy Student level will receive a FREE year’s subscription to Consumer Reports’ “Money Advisor” newsletter.
MD CASH is also launching a financial coaching program, MyBudgetCoach™ and is looking for people who would like to work one-on-one with a professionally trained budget coach who will guide them through the process of creating a spending plan that fits their personal financial goals, needs and wants. Free in-person financial education classes are being launched in Prince Georges County and can be found through the MD CASH Academy, the state’s only an online calendar and registration system for fact-based, non-biased financial education classes. Classes are being offered at Unity Economic Development Corporation’s offices located at 5801 Allentown Road #308 Suitland, MD 20746, along with Andrews Federal Credit Union located at 5711 Allentown Road, Suitland, MD 20746. Here are some Tips on ways to manage money:
*Set Financial Goals. Create a visual reminder of the goal. This could be a picture to put on your door, or even a piece of paper in your wallet with the financial goal written on it.
*Create a Spending Plan so you tell your money where to go versus your money just going.
*Create a Savings Plan, including specifics on how much will be saved and where you will save it, i.e.: change in a jar, $10 a week in a savings account, etc.
*Protect Yourself from ID Theft by limiting access to your personal information. Never carry your social security card with you, question anyone who asks for your social security number, shred personal documents before placing them in the trash and replace debit/credit cards that may have been involved in any of the recent data breaches by large retailers.
