Criminal charges dropped for county bus driver in 2014 pedestrian accident

UPPER MARLBORO-- All criminal charges against a former Prince George’s County bus driver charged with killing a pedestrian in downtown Upper Marlboro in July 2014 were dropped Thursday.

The judge ruled that the actions of Michelle Murray, an Anne Arundel County resident, were not criminal and dropped charges of manslaughter and criminal negligent homicide. Murray is still facing traffic charges for the July 31, 2014 incident.

According to police officials, on that day, Murray was driving a Prince George’s County bus when she struck and killed pedestrian Patsy Burton of La Plata at the intersection of Main Street and Water Street in downtown Upper Marlboro. Burton was dragged 20 feet.

Officials ruled Sept. 8 the incident was accidental. They believe Burton did not see the bus turning as she stepped into the crosswalk and that Murray did not see her because she was in the bus’s blindspot.

Murray's employment was terminated by the county. It’s unknown if she will be able to get her job back.

Burton’s husband told Murray that he forgave her for what happened according to NBC Washington.
