HOFBALTIMORE – Lefty Driesell turned heads from the minute he arrived at the University of Maryland in 1969. He made it very clear that he would turn around the school’s sputtering men’s basketball team – uttering the famous line that he would make it the UCLA of the East – and quickly made the Terps a powerhouse on the national stage.

Prince George’s Sentinel Basketball Player of the Year: Daniel Oladapo

DanielOladapo4BLADENSBURG – Coming into his final year with the Bladensburg High School boys basketball team, Daniel Oladapo knew he would carry the load on offense this season. Regardless of the tight early schedule, player injuries and student transfers, the senior wanted to prove that he was one of the best players in the county. Head Coach Antonio Williams agreed with his young star player, naming him team captain, but asked him to strive for more.

Copy of ashiamccallaGREENBELT – On Feb. 8, the Eleanor Roosevelt Lady Raiders girl’s varsity basketball team looked for their sixth straight win at home against DuVal. Roosevelt came out with a substantial 59-27 victory to keep their winning streak intact, but that home game meant more to others. Senior guard Ashia McCalla led her team with 15 points and four rebounds but also completed a milestone in her high school career as she scored her 1,000th point. Just as McCalla led her team to a win against the Tigers, she led the Lady Raiders to an unforgettable season.

Gators end Bladensburg’s state championship dreams

DanielOladapo5COLLEGE PARK – Bladensburg Boys' Basketball Head Coach Antonio Williams walked by each one of his players, hugging them before they received their Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) State Finalist medals. As he accepted the trophy representing second place, the rugged Williams lifted it over his head and presented the prize to all the fans in attendance.
