Town councilman arrested for burglary

BLADENSBURG – Bladensburg town councilmember Selwyn Bridgeman was arrested on May 12 on burglary charges. According to the Fairfax County Police Department, Bridgeman, 41, allegedly tried to visit an acquaintance in an apartment complex in Fairfax, Virginia, in late January. However, he approached the wrong residence. After his acquaintance did not open the door, Bridgeman entered through an unlocked entrance.

A dark ‘Macbeth’ is lit at Blackfriars Playhouse

Macbeth StauntonSTAUNTON – Though we “write men’s virtues in water,” according to Shakespeare, performing plays as ever “more water glideth by” is quite another matter. The topic this week is performing Shakespeare as it was meant to be enacted, for the Hard Bargain Players of Prince George’s County in May performed Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” from May 10 to 19. It was performed in “a space where it was always meant to be played: right under our beautiful canopy of trees and starlight!” Although the Hard Bargain Players’ website waxed in this way lyrical on its Theatre in the Woods productions in Accokeek, the outdoor performance I had hoped to attend was not possible due to the heavy daily rains of last week. “To the water side, I must conduct your grace” indeed! (Shakespeare).

Primary election coverage: District 9 candidates

SEABROOK – The county is about a month out from the June primaries. As all of the candidates running for the county council District 9 seat are registered Democrats, this primary will likely determine the next councilmember for that area. This year’s candidates are Orlando Barnes, Tanya Brooks, Tamara Davis Brown, Kevin Harris, Sydney Harrison, Daren Hester, Jeffrey Rascoe and Rodney Taylor. Sherman Hardy withdrew from the race in December.

Camille Lorente lacrosseGAITHERSBURG – With rain splashing off his hat as time expired, Eleanor Roosevelt Boys Lacrosse Head Coach Scott Sorenson clapped as his players headed to the sideline. To his surprise, they were not upset. His players told him that this was a learning experience that they needed to go through that experience to complete their goal of winning a state title.
