The University of Maryland student and surviving victim of a murder-suicide shooting Tuesday morning in College Park has been identified.
U-Md. junior Neal Oa was shot in the leg before running to a neighbor’s house for help after his roommate opened fire, killing their other roommate, 22-year-old undergraduate student Stephen Rane, of Silver Spring.
Oa’s stepfather, Chris Merz, told the Frederick News-Post it was “a miracle he survived.” He also said his stepson is planning to return to school, but he will not be living in the house where the shooting occurred.
Oa and Rane were shot by U-Md. graduate student Dayvon Green. All three students resided together on 36th Avenue in College Park.
An investigation into why Green set fires inside and around the home and then shot his roommates before killing himself continues. It was confirmed Wednesday that Green was schizophrenic and had bipolar disorder.
