Kendra and Anthony wed at St. Mary’s in Old Town

Kendra MacLean and Anthony Pomilla were married Aug. 18 at St. Mary’s Church in Old Town Alexandria. The bride is the daughter of Audrey Pridgen-MacLean, of Skyline. The groom is the son of Anthony and Anne Pomilla.

Kendra’s grandfather, Col. Aubrey Pridgen, formerly of Skyline, flew in from San Antonio to give the bride away. Ailsa Squatrito, aunt of the bride, was matron of honor and Zachary Streeter was best man. The reception was at the Collingwood Library and Museum, once part of George Washington’s River Farm, on the Potomac River, off the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Kendra graduated from Grace Brethren Christian High School in Clinton and has a degree in textile design from the Philadelphia University School of Engineering and Textiles. She works for the Victory Van Corporation in Alexandria. Anthony graduated from Bishop Ireton High School and Northern Virginia Community College and works for the Fairfax Water Authority.

The newlyweds honeymooned at the Delaware beaches and are making their home in Alexandria.

Happy 100th birthday, Mr. Moore!

Booker C. S. Moore, who turned 100 on Aug. 22, celebrated his 100th birthday at the Waldorf Jaycees Center on Aug. 25. He is the oldest member of Asbury Methodist Church in Brandywine.

He was born near Piscataway, the youngest of the 14 children of Joseph and Priscilla Moore, and the first in his family to graduate from high school, Upper Marlboro Colored Elementary and High School for Negroes. 

He was a farmer and worked at Andrews Field from which he retired in the 1950s. After that, he owned and operated a cabinet shop in Brandywine with his brother, Wilson Moore.

Neighbors

JoZahn Wood, of Morningside, has been nominated to represent his school, Drew-Freeman Middle School in Suitland, at the National Young Leaders State Conference. Morningside is helping sponsor him. Recently he was awarded the Certificate of Participation in the summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Program.

Carrissa Munns was sworn in as a Morningside Police officer by Mayor Karen Rooker on Aug. 21.

Former Morningsider Rose Hoffman enjoyed Sunfest in Ocean City with her daughter Donna’s girls, Shannon Bivens and Tracy Morris. She also attended a recent Donkey Baseball Game. Rose is always on the go!

Flea market, festival, film and more coming up

My mistake! I had the wrong date. The Skyline Citizens Association is hosting a flea market at the Morningside Fire Department from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. To reserve a table for $13, call Suzanne or Spivey at 240-838-6412.

The 14th Annual Suitland Festival will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Suitland Community Center, located at 5600 Regency Lane in Forestville.

“Lost in Detention,” a film that exposes the imprisonment, isolation, confusion and harm experienced by immigrants in the long and painful deportation process, will be shown at Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Suitland Road Baptist Church is hosting its 14th Annual Women’s Conference from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the church, located at 6412 Suitland Road. There is a $25 fee for luncheon and materials. Deadline for payment is Sept. 30. For information, contact Carolyn at 301-735-4075.

Morningside Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its Open House from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. There will be fun for the kids, fire-safety presentations, refreshments and more. Come and bring the family.

Changing landscape

A movie theater complex, Fuddruckers and Cheddar’s are among the businesses planning to open in the spring of next year at Brandywine Crossing. 

The Friends of the Library Book Store reopened at the Surratts-Clinton Library on Sept. 8.

May she rest in peace

Margaret Louise “Peggy” Jenkins Foley, 80, graduate of the old Maryland Park High School, died Aug. 14. She was born in Bradbury Heights, daughter of Estelle and James Stone. She was married for 58 years to her high school sweetheart, Donald Spencer Foley, who died in 2010. She was also predeceased by daughter Donna Lee Quinn. Survivors include four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is buried at Cheltenham.
