Wise dominates Northwestern
Wise’s baseball team completely dismantled Northwestern 15-5 on Saturday. The Pumas captured their second-straight win of the season in a dominant fashion. Senior pitcher Sterling Swann earned his first win of the season at the mound on five innings pitched and he accounted for eight strikeouts. Senior outfielder Vincent Johnson had two hits, three RBIs, and three runs in an offensive onslaught.
Riverdale Baptist catcher named player of the game
The Riverdale Baptist baseball team defeated Archbishop Spaulding 10-0 last Wednesday. Andrew Sharpe was named player of the game for his second time in the Champions Classic. Sharpe went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Sharpe also didn’t allow for a single stolen base, while catching for six scoreless innings for the Crusaders.
Bowie State player recognized
Bowie State University’s star senior forward Byron Westmoreland was voted into the NABC Coaches Division II All-District Team with First-Team honors on Friday. His stunning performances this year helped lead his team to capture the Bulldogs’ second CIAA Basketball Championship since 2003. Westmoreland has also achieved many other accolades to add to his trophy case this season. He was selected as a member of the 2012-2013 All-CIAA Team, CIAA All-Tournament Team, Daktronics All-American Team Honorable Mention, and won the CIAA Championship game’s Most Valuable Player award.
Maryland tops Quinnipiac in first round
The University of Maryland’s women’s basketball squad crushed Quinnipiac University 72-52 in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday in College Park. Alyssa Thomas led the No. 4-seed Terrapins in scoring with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Riverdale Baptist alumna Tianna Hawkins also had a double-double — scoring 23 points and pulling down 16 rebounds.
