The Bowie State men’s basketball team has had its ups and downs this season, but the Bulldogs have ultimately achieved the goals they set out to accomplish at the beginning of the season.

The Bulldogs took the Northern Division by storm and secured their second CIAA Championship against Livingstone. Byron Westmoreland was named the game’s most valuable player with 38 points, four steals, six rebounds and two assists.

“The game was kind of what we expected,” head coach Darrell Brooks said. “It was a war. We thought it was going to be a very physical game. We thought that the team that did the best job defending and on the backboards would be the team that would probably win the game and, fortunately, it was us.”

The Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them in the first round of NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament against No. 1 West Liberty University on Saturday. The NCAA selection committee gave Bowie State the No. 8 seed in the tournament out of the 64 teams participating. If the Bulldogs run the tables and win out, they will be able to play in the NCAA Division II Championship game on April 7 in Atlanta.

“West Liberty is a tremendous team. ... Not only are they No.1 in the region, they’re No.1 in the country, and an offensive juggernaut averaging 103 points per game,” Brooks said. “We’re going to have to be good defensively and offensively, and we must do a good job taking care of the basketball and rebound. We’ve been there before where people counted us out before the game ever started, but I’m confident in our team and the guys are ready to go.”
