A Christmas Eve crash on the Baltimore Washington Parkway killed a man and backed up holiday traffic for several hours, causing major delays for motorists heading out of town.

U.S. Park Police are investigating the fatal accident that occurred just before 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department responded to the northbound lanes of the parkway between Annapolis and Riverdale roads. Firefighters located a man, described as in his forties, trapped inside his vehicle. The car appeared to have veered off the roadway, striking a large tree in the median, fire officials said.

The driver was unconscious and suffering from severe trauma. He was extricated and flown in a U.S. Park Police helicopter to a nearby trauma center, where he later died.

Traffic was backed up in the District of Columbia for several hours causing major delays for buses going to New York City as well as holiday travelers heading north and to Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport.

The cause of the accident is unknown as of The Sentinel’s deadline, according to U. S. Park Police.
