Woodland Indian Discovery Day

Learn to see fields, forests, rivers, and streams the Yaocomaco way and you’ll see clothing, food, tools, building materials, weapons, and toys.

During Woodland Indian Discovery Day at Historic St. Mary’s City on Sept. 11, discover how the first Marylanders’ comfortable lifestyle was based on a keen understanding of their natural surroundings.

From 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., try the skills the Woodland Indians mastered to create household and decorative items from plant and animal materials.

Imagine you had to make every meal from foods you could catch or grow and cook it over a fire started by friction.

Practice your aim shooting a bow and arrow or take a turn grinding corn. Try to identify the foods that were the staples of the Yaocomaco diet and take an edible plants walk at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m.

Discover the traditions that shaped Woodland Indian society and step a traditional dance at a special performance by the Tayac Territory Dancers at 1 p.m.

Special activities are included in general admission to the museum: $10 adult, $3.50 for children age 6-12, and free for those under

5 years and Friends members.  Oxendine Catering will be on site offering Native American foods for sale. Start your visit at the HSMC Visitor Center (18751 Hogaboom Lane).  Woodland Indian Discovery Day is presented with generous support from the Historic St. Mary’s City Foundation.    Contact: 1-800-762-1634, 240-895-4990, or visit www.stmaryscity.org.
