BOWIE – For the second time within a week, a person has been killed by an Amtrak train in Prince George's County.
Just after 9:00 a.m. on April 24, an Amtrak train traveling to New York struck an Amtrak employee on the tracks near the train station on Jericho Park Road near Old Town Bowie.
Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) said the victim was a watchman whose job was to alert other workers when trains approach.
The victim was allegedly standing on the middle track when a southbound train traveling at full speed fatally struck the worker.
"When our firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene, they located the victim about a half mile from the station suffering from massive life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene," said Prince George's County Fire Department spokesperson Mark Brady.
A spokesperson for Amtrak said it was Amtrak Northeast Regional train 86 traveling from Richmond to Boston. A reported 251 passengers, in addition to crew members, on the train were not injured during the incident.
