Copy of ashiamccallaGREENBELT – On Feb. 8, the Eleanor Roosevelt Lady Raiders girl’s varsity basketball team looked for their sixth straight win at home against DuVal. Roosevelt came out with a substantial 59-27 victory to keep their winning streak intact, but that home game meant more to others. Senior guard Ashia McCalla led her team with 15 points and four rebounds but also completed a milestone in her high school career as she scored her 1,000th point. Just as McCalla led her team to a win against the Tigers, she led the Lady Raiders to an unforgettable season.

Fairmont Heights wins 1A regional title over Friendly

DarrenLucas WhiteLARGO – Last season, the Fairmont Heights boys' basketball squad won in a nailbiter in the 2017 Class 1A Maryland Regional Championship match with a four-point victory over Havre de Grace High School. This year, the Hornets were looking for back-to-back regional championships against a new challenger in Friendly High School.

Peterson leads Suitland to victory over Bladensburg

BLADENSBURG – Coming off of a 78-33 blowout loss to Suitland High School on earlier this season, the Bladensburg Lady Mustangs were looking for redemption. Fast forward a month, Bladensburg did not want to have a repeat performance on Jan. 15 during senior night, but it seemed to be inevitable.

PGCC men falls to Cecil College to end winning streak

LARGO – The Prince George’s Community College men’s basketball squad came into its Nov. 30 contest having won three of its last four games, while the Owls’ opponents, the Cecil College Seahawks, had lost three of their last four.

A combination of missed free throws, bad fouls and lousy defense cost the Owls on their home court, as they lost 91-89 to end their two-game winning streak.

Perryville ends Douglass' run in volleyball semifinals

COLLEGE PARK – A high school volleyball battle ensued at the Ritchie Coliseum between the Frederick Douglass Eagles and the Perryville Panthers with a chance to advance to the 1A girls’ state finals.

With a win-or-go-home scenario in place, both teams left it all out on the hardwood. Despite Douglass’ best efforts, Perryville was too much for the Lady Eagles to handle as the Panthers won in three consecutive sets (25-4, 25-7, 25-15) on Nov. 15 to move on to the state championship.

Roosevelt volleyball defeats Northwestern to win regional title

GREENBELT - The top two Prince George’s County volleyball teams, Northwestern and Eleanor Roosevelt, battled in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association 4A playoff bracket last Friday for a chance to become the queens of the county and move on to the state semifinals.

Roosevelt, who dominated opposing teams throughout the season, reminded Northwestern just how good it is by sweeping the Lady Wildcats, 25-9, 25-10, 25-11 on Nov. 10 to win the regional championship.
