DeMatha defeats Bishop McNamara for WCAC title
DeMatha won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Championship by defeating Bishop McNamara 1-0 at the University of Maryland, College Park last Monday. Senior Kyle Fitzmaurice was perfect at the plate going two for two, and he drove in Carl Colbert to score the only run of the contest. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Andy Rozylowicz hurled a complete game and struck out five batters to help the Stags win the biggest game of their year.
Eleanor Roosevelt softball wins regional over Bowie
Eleanor Roosevelt’s softball team defeated Bowie 7-2 last Thursday in Greenbelt to win the Class 4A South region title match. Sophomore pitcher Joya Grillo threw a complete game with three strikeouts. She hurled 66 pitches — 48 of which were called strikes. Catcher Emily Casto hit two RBIs and freshman Claire Mudd hit three singles.
Baysox record first sweep this season
The Bowie Baysox swept New Britain in their three-game home series last week by outscoring the Rock Cats 27-6. During the third game, Ty Kelly had a five-RBI performance for the second time in his career. The Baysox defeated the Rock Cats 9-1 that game. The sweep is the first for the Baysox this season and the first three-game home sweep since they did it against Portland in June 2012.
U-Md. women’s lacrosse advances to NCAA final four
The University of Maryland women’s lacrosse team defeated Duke 14-9 on Saturday in College Park. They will advance to the final four against Syracuse on Friday at Villanova Stadium. Goalkeeper Kasey Howard recorded seven saves, and the undefeated Terps will make their fifth-straight final four appearance.
