First jam session

A great time was had by all on Friday, May 10, at our city’s first jam session of the summer. “Atomic Swing Club” entertained us for most of the evening. Good eats, seeing old friends, and sitting outside on a lovely spring evening made everyone happy. Mark your calendars for our next jam session scheduled for Friday, June 14.

Burger-eating challenge

On Saturday, May 11, I attended the Elevation Burger Vertigo Challenge. Our volunteer fire department, our city police department and our public works department competed to see which team could down the famous 10-patty Vertigo Burger the fastest. This was a fundraiser for the Special Olympics of Prince George’s County. Hats off to Elevation Burger for donating $1 to Special Olympics for every burger sold that day. Located at Baltimore Avenue and Jefferson, this restaurant is part of the new EYA complex.

Get fit

The new semester of Ageless Grace low-impact exercise classes is underway. Join us at Magruder Park Recreation Center, 3911 Hamilton Street, from 10 to 11 a.m. Fridays. The class is just $2 per participant. The exercise is chair-based, and nearly anyone can take part and benefit from increased flexibility and strength. Please call our city to register at 301-985-5058. Hope to see you there!

Hyattsville history: 1966

Three changes in the City Charter were approved by the mayor and City Council. First, the three-member Board of Elections Supervisors would be appointed and serve a four-year term. Next, the detailed system regarding municipal boundaries was amended so city limits could be changed by ordinances. Finally, under the new charter provision, ordinances could not be voted upon for at least 20 days after being proposed. Our Northwestern High School band was not only invited to participate in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, but had the honor of escorting Santa Claus.
