On Oct 14, Maryland junior linebacker L.A. Goree was named Atlantic Coast Conference Linebacker of the Week for his performance in the Terrapins’ 27-26 win over Virginia.

Goree, a Bowie native, registered a career-high 16 tackles including nine solo stops in the Terps’ win over Virginia.

The C.H. Flowers High School graduate helped Maryland rebound after a 63-0 loss to Florida State the previous week.

“It was really huge,” said Goree, “because at that point a lot of teams would hold their head down and say that the season is over. We definitely held our heads high and came out with a tough victory.”

Goree’s 16 tackles is the most by a Maryland player since Demetrius Hartsfield recorded 18 tackles against N.C. State during the 2011 campaign.

“I think L.A. is having a really good year for us,” said Maryland head coach Randy Edsall. “It’s great to see him get the recognition this week for his play a week ago. I think he’s really become more of a student of the game and understanding his role and how his role revolves within our defense, but again I’ve liked the progression he’s made in the last three years and I think he’s still going to get better.”

Goree became the fifth Maryland player to earn ACC weekly honors this season, joining a list that includes Stefon Diggs, Dexter McDougle, Marcus Whitfield and A.J. Hendy.

“He’s a guy that really wants to do well, he’s not afraid of hard work, he’s physical,” said Edsall. “But again, I think the same thing; he’ll just continue to get better as he continues to hone his techniques and continues to get better from a fundamentals standpoint.”
