A police K-9 unit took down a man who was barricaded inside a Lanham house for more than eight hours Sunday.
Prince George’s County Police Department was called just after midnight Sunday to the 9500 block of Wellington Street in Lanham. Neighbors told police they saw a man inside a house with a gun, breaking out windows and throwing appliances outside, according to police.
Police officers determined the man inside the house was the homeowner and did not know if anyone else was inside the split-level home. After several attempts of trying to get the man outside, the county’s SWAT team was called to the scene.
“Members of the department’s SWAT team attempted several times to try to get the suspect out of the house,” said Cpl. Nicole Hubbard, PGPD spokesperson. “Just after 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning, the suspect jumped out of a top-floor window with a gun.”
Several officers chased the man. Shots were fired and a police dog was released. Within a minute, the dog brought down the armed suspect, Hubbard said.
Police believe the suspect may have been using PCP or a different drug.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital. He has been charged with assault of a police officer and several other charges.
