A Prince George’s County man pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and two first-degree rapes that occurred in 1990. He received a life sentence.

“What we are talking about here is a predator that went after young women who had their whole lives ahead of them,” said Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks. “I am proud of our prosecutors and police for solving these cold cases, and we hope that the surviving family and friends have found some level of closure and peace.”

In a Prince George’s County courtroom, Thomas Lee Posey, 57, pleaded guilty to the rape and killing of Margaret Perkins, 22, of Beltsville. Posey’s plea was accepted by Prince George’s County Circuit Judge Albert Northrop.

In June 1990, Perkins was jogging a through a Berwyn Heights park when she was raped and murdered. Perkins was reported missing when she did not return home that evening. The next day, a group of firefighters playing a softball game found her body. She had been strangled.

In May and September 1990, respectively, Posey accosted two women from behind with a broken bottle. He then robbed and raped both of them. Both were 20-year-old college students at the time of the incidents, and the women had similar hair color and similar build.

Posey was imprisoned at the time that his DNA was matched to the DNA collected at the respective crime scenes. He had been found guilty in 1992 of accosting a woman at an ATM machine with a sawed-off shotgun, robbing her and then locking her in the trunk of her own car after he raped her.

“It is very satisfying to me when our prosecutors take on challenging cold cases like these and secure victory for the victims and the community as a whole,” Alsobrooks said.
