A 14-year-old boy was killed in a shooting that Prince George’s County police believe was gang related last Wednesday in Lewisdale.
The youth, identified as Eliezer Benjamin Reyes, is the 59th homicide victim in Prince George’s County in 2012.
The shooting was reported just after midnight last Wednesday in the 2200 block of Sheridan Street just off of East West Highway.
Patrol units from the Hyattsville District, of the Prince George’s County Police Department, arrived on the scene and located two males suffering from gunshots to their upper bodies, according to Cpl. Larry Johnson.
Reyes, of Lewisdale, was shot in the head. He was transported to a local trauma center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The second victim was transported to a local hospital suffering from a minor gunshot wound to his upper body, Johnson said. He has since been treated and released, according to police officials.
The preliminary investigation suggests a suspect or suspects fired shots from a vehicle as the two victims and two other males were walking down the street. Police said two members of the group are documented gang members.
A few minutes after the shooting occurred, Hyattsville police officers spotted the vehicle near 37th and Nicholson streets in Hyattsville. After a short chase and a bailout, police apprehended one of two males who were in the van, police officials said.
Police arrested Jose Rodriguez-Nunez, 24, of Hyattsville, and he was initially charged with second-degree murder among other charges. However, further investigation vindicated Rodriguez-Nunez, and the charges were dropped.
The second suspect who fled from the van has been identified as Luis Carlos Guzman-Ventura, 18, of Lewisdale. Police obtained a warrant for Guzman-Ventura’s arrest, and detectives are actively searching for him. He is facing first-degree murder and related charges.
