The Bowie Baysox have had a roller coaster season. But, the team was never short of talent.
Six Baysox players were recently selected to play for the Western Division team in the 2013 Eastern League All-Star Game on July 10 in New Britain, Conn.
The six players named to the All-Star team are Caleb Joseph, Henry Urrutia, Niuman Romero, Mike Wright, Ty Kelly and Jason Gurka.
Joseph, 27, is considered a five-tool player and one of the most pro-ready prospects on the Baysox roster. He hit 15 home runs and has tallied 58 RBIs this season. Joseph also earned the nomination of the Eastern League Player of the week on June 16.
Urrutia took little time to adjust from playing in Cuba to playing for an American minor league team. In his first stint with the Orioles AA team, Urrutia hit a whopping batting average of .365 in the 52 games he started. This season he has amassed 73 hits, 33 runs and 37 RBIs.
Romero has been a solid shortstop for the Baysox with a .968 fielding percentage this season. Romero also racked up 50 hits, 22 RBIs and an on base percentage of .385 in 44 games. He was selected to the All-Star team last year for the Erie Seawolves.
Wright has a record of 6-2 with an ERA of 4.12 in his 15 starts. The right-handed pitcher has a strong fastball with good control. He leads the Baysox pitchers with 75 strikeouts in 78.2 innings. Wright started the season with a 4-0 record and an ERA of 1.85 in May.
As the team’s lead-off batter, Kelly has been a cornerstone of Bowie’s potent offensive attack. Kelly boasts a slugging percentage of .389 and leads the Baysox with 21 doubles. He is second with 45 RBIs and third with 102 total bases. He also racked up 51 runs and 80 hits.
Gurka has been called up from the bullpen when the Baysox needed to get quick outs and to stabilize the game. He has a record of 2-2 with an ERA of 2.79. Gurka has earned four saves in an 18-game span and threw 45 strikeouts.
