Yard sale bargains!

I had such an enjoyable time last weekend, when our city hosted it semiannual citywide yard sale. I found a few good bargains and bumped into a few old friends.

Fall Fest

In conjunction with the citywide yard sales, the First Baptist Church on 42nd Avenue held its third annual Fall Fest.  The yard sale got underway at 8 a.m. while the Fall Fest began at 11. I was able to bring home a delicious bag of red apples. All proceeds raised from both events, will go to support Deborah’s House, a shelter for victims of domestic abuse in Tijuana, Mexico.

Prison trip

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, I participated in a day’s outing with one of my senior groups. We took a bus ride down to the old Lorton Reformatory in Lorton, Va. The prison closed in the 1970s, and the facility is now an art center. We enjoyed hearing the history of the reformatory, which was a low-security prison. The inmates were housed in dormitories instead of cells. The walking tour that we engaged in was so interesting, as we saw the various artists at work and admired their finished products. Stopping for lunch at a restaurant on main street of historic Occoquan completed our day.

Volunteer with animals

The Alley Cat Rescue Group, a non-kill facility located in Brentwood on Route 1, is in need of volunteers. If you have some free time and would like to help out, please call 301-277-5595.

Hyattsville history: 1968

During the summer, the town took time out from the problems associated with growth to celebrate the golden anniversary of Hawkins Electric Company. At a reception at the Park University Motel in College Park, friends and business associates gathered to honor both Jay C. “Pop” Hawkins, a founder of the company, and his son, George, the new president.
