Remembering Jane Henson

We were so sorry to hear of the death of Jane Henson, wife of the late Jim Henson. Jane and Jim met when they were both students at the University of Maryland and became partners in the creation of the much-loved Muppets.  Jim lived in University Park and attended Northwestern High School. After Jim died in 1990, Jane remained active and helped in so many of the projects at Northwestern. She passed away at her home in Connecticut and leaves five grown children and seven grandchildren.

Councilman relinquishing seat

Due to the demands of his job, Eric Wingard is stepping down as a city councilman for Ward 1. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. It is re-assuring to know that he is not leaving the city.

Municipal elections

All of our candidates for office in the May 7 election have been certified. So, please everyone get out and vote. This is our city and we want to keep things exciting. The polling locations are: Ward 1, City Municipal Building; Ward 2 and Ward 5, Magruder Park Recreation Building; Ward 3, University Christian Church; and Ward 4, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. I will be an election judge in Ward 3, so I hope to meet many of you at that location.

Transportation on demand

Many of our residents are unaware that we offer a Call a Bus service in Hyattsville. This service is available on weekdays by appointment only. Transportation is available throughout the greater Hyattsville area, including Greenbelt, for trips to the grocery store, medical appointments, pharmacies, area senior centers and more. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call India Kea at 301-985-5020.

Rename Farragut bungalow

The Hyattsville Community Development Corporation is turning a neglected stone bungalow on Farragut Street into new digs, and staffers want you to give it a name to go with the new look. The Renaming of 4314 Farragut contest runs through June 1 and offers a prize gift certificate of $75 to a Hyattsville restaurant of the winner’s choosing. For more information, please call 301-683-8267. I have always found this structure to be so unique. I have always been curious about its history.
