Morningside Councilman Kline resigns, Mullins assigned

Kevin Kline, a member of the Morningside Town Council since May 2011, submitted a letter of resignation at the Jan. 15 town meeting, officially stepping down as a member of the council. He wrote that an excellent new job is preventing him from serving Morningside as he has been doing. He thanked the town and its residents for their support.

To fill the remaining months of Kevin’s term, Town Council appointed Todd Mullins. He will complete the term until the next election in May.

The election will be held on Monday, May 6, at Morningside Town Hall, to elect the mayor and two council members. Anyone interested in running for office must submit a petition by March 4 to have his or her name placed on the ballot.       

Know a Prince George’s County resident 90 or older?

Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation needs your help locating Prince George’s residents ages 90 and older to be honored at a spring event. Special recognition will be given to centenarians, residents 100 years old and older. Please share the information with them by calling staff at 301-446-3400 no later than Feb. 27.

Coming up

The next Morningside Town Meeting will be at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 19 in the Town Hall.

Skyline Citizens Association will hold its winter meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Morningside Fire Department or at Skyline School.

At the VFW in Morningside, Phyllis Cooks, president of VFW Post 9619 Auxiliary, invites you to their annual Ticky Tacky Tea Party from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. The event benefits the auxiliary’s Cancer Aid and Research Program. For information, call Phyllis at 301-736-5022.

Letitia Gwynn, musician and docent, dies at 93

Letitia Bogan Gwynn, 93, past president and longtime docent for the Surratt Society, died Jan. 11 in Annapolis. She was born in Washington, the daughter of Dr. Joseph and Lillian Bogan.

She graduated from Roosevelt High in 1936 and from Western Maryland College in 1940 and went on to teach English and music at Oxon Hill High School, where she also coached girls’ basketball. In 1942, she married the Oxon Hill principal, Thomas S. Gwynn, Jr., at Camp Lee, Va., after he enlisted in the Army.

Following the war, the Gwynns settled in Clinton, where she was a substitute teacher in the Prince George’s County schools, taught piano in her home, was organist and children’s choir director at St. John’s Church, and was active with the Surratt Society and the Lady Lions Club. In recent years she was a resident of the Ginger Cove Retirement Community where she sang in the choir. 

Her husband of 48 years, Thomas Gwynn, died in 1990. Survivors include her children, Sally Evans, Thomas Summers Gwynn III, Juliette Gwynn and Loleta Gwynn, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

May they rest in peace

Kathleen Sharon “Kathy” Walthall, 70, member of the VFW 9619 Auxiliary and the American Legion in Chesapeake Beach, died Jan. 31. She graduated from Anacostia High School in 1960 and married Walter Walthall on Jan. 6, 1961. She worked for GSA, Census Bureau and Naval Research Lab, from which she retired in 2007. She was the mother of Darlene Wahler and Steven Neal Walthall and grandmother of four.

Leonard Alexander “Linny” Jameson, Jr., 69, Suitland High 1961 graduate, died Jan. 25 at his home in Byrdstown, Tenn. He was born in Washington, son of Leonard and Elizabeth McDermott Jameson. In 1996, he retired as a systems analyst for the Department of State and moved to Tennessee where he enjoyed golf, fishing and working on antique cars. Survivors include his wife and high school sweetheart, Patricia “Patsy” Clevenger Jameson; children, Karen White, Ronnie and Paul Jameson; sisters, Donna Conway, Debbie Herbert and Gayle Clare; and eight grandchildren.
