VFW 9619 loses two veterans on the same day

VFW Post 9619, in Morningside, lost on Oct. 25 two former members, Charles Howard and Jesse Young.

Charles Phillip Howard, 92, lived in Tall Timbers and died in Leonardtown. He served in the Navy during World War II and then was a plumber, later forming his own company, Eno & Howard Plumbing. His wife Myrtle predeceased him. Survivors include two sons, his sister Laura Mae Hunter, and grandchildren.

Jesse Littleton Young Jr., 93, lived in Lusby and died in Callaway. He served in the Army during WWII, was captured by the Germans and spent two years in a prisoner of war camp. After the war, he went to work for Metro as a bus driver, retiring in 1978. Survivors include his wife Nona Joyce Young; daughter Jessie Lou Chapman, two siblings, and grandchildren.

Holy Family Church celebrates 60th

Holy Family Catholic Church, in Hillcrest Heights, was established as a parish on Nov. 6, 1952, when the Quonset building on the parking lot behind Murphy’s 5 & 10 (now, The Dollar Store) on 23rd Parkway was dedicated as a temporary church by Archbishop Patrick O’Boyle. On Nov. 24, 1965, ground was broken for the church and parish building and one year later the archbishop dedicated them.

Eleven years later, on March 7, 1967, a fire of unknown origin destroyed the roof and did extensive damage to the interior of the church. Nearby Shugart School, which closed its doors in 2009, was used as a temporary church until renovations were completed in October 1967.

On April 5, 1970, ground was broken for the new church. Cardinal O’Boyle dedicated the new church on May 16, 1971.

Holy Family invites present and former parishioners, and others, to its 60th anniversary celebration at 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in the Allen Drury Room. Tickets are $25 for adults, $12.50 for ages 12 and under. For information, contact the rectory at 301-894-2222.

Neighbors

Jean Glaubitz, widow of Jerry Glaubitz, longtime mayor of Morningside, sent a note of congratulations to the town’s new police chief, Jeff Gray. She told him to “take good care of my town.”

Mary Reilly and her son Jim, of Skyline, recently attended the funeral of Mary’s cousin, Sister Mary Rose McGeady, who died Sept. 13. Sister is noted for her work with charities and served as executive director of Covenant House in New York City. She was the author of “God’s Lost Children; the Shocking Story of America’s Lost Children” and other titles.

My sister-in-law Rosemary Mudd, who died in Florida on Oct. 17, was laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery on Nov. 2. She is now with her husband Joe (my dear brother) who died in October 1973 in a helicopter accident in Korea. Joe and Rosemary had eight children and 17 grandchildren, many of whom gathered at my house later that day. They polished off nine large pizzas.  

Changing landscape

Speed cameras along Suitland Road in Morningside have been moved. Believe it or not, the speed limit is 30 mph. Slow down!

Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and Col. William Knight, 11th Wing/Joint Base Andrews commander, cut the grand-opening ribbon of the AbilityOne Base Supply Center on Aug. 7. The center is operated by Blind Industries and Service of Maryland, which employs legally-blind workers.

Suitland Class of ’63 plans 50th

Jimmy Rainwater and Carolyn Hartsock Fonner are working on a 50th reunion for the Suitland High School Class of 1963. May he rest in peace

Milton L. Cox, Jr., 77, of Jessup, a 1953 graduate of Suitland High, died Oct. 24. He served 20 years in the Air Force and worked at N & N Contractors until 2003. Survivors include his wife Sharon, three children, six grandchildren 13 great-grandkids and two step-daughters.
